Rarity Scale: Mega Rare
The most wanted album by this band and we have found a great copy! This copy has two records of the album!! This is how we found it and also want to offer to a potential new owner.
The gatefold sleeve of this UK 1st pressing is laminated on the outside and not on the inside. This is uncommon for the UK Vertigo releases but a few 1st pressing Vertigo albums had laminated sleeves.
The 1st vinyl (record with clean labels) of this copy is VG+ to EX-. It plays OK but not perfect. It plays with background. The music is loud and clear but there is background throughout. Side 2 is slightly better. There are tiny pops here and there but that’s nothing really serious. The record shows some minor hairlines and one slightly bigger line. Overall the lines does not bring extra negative issues to the playback. We play graded this record with the greatest care on our Thorens TD124. The labels are very clean with only a few spindle traces.
The 2nd record looks better and has a better playback. We grade this record EX to EX+. There is less background. The sound is loud and clear with no major issues. Some tiny imperfections like super tiny pops and some slicht crackle at the very beginning of both sides. Further the sound is lovely and enjoyable for the more serious record collector. Tiny drawback is that the B-side label has some sticker residue. Therefore to be on the safe side we give the second record a final grade of EX.
The gatefold is lovely with a lovely spine and opening. The are no creases, tears or stains. There is very tiny damage to the laminate on the front but it is nothing serious. The spine is in lovely order and fully readable. A very hard to find Vertigo prog monster! Overall we grade this sleeve EX. This copy comes with a original Vertigo Swirl polylined inner.

A large selection of rare vinyl records from the golden era.
This copy of the album is a mega rare 1st pressing with a large Swirl A-Side label and a small Swirl B-Side label with the Vertigo credit above the spindle hole. This label layout was used from 1971 till late 1972. After this lay out the Swirl design emerged into the Roger Dean designed “Spaceship label”.
Gravy Train was a UK progressive rock band from Lancashire England. It was formed in 1969 and disbanded in 1974. They released four studio albums. Two albums were released on Vertigo and two albums on Swirl. The debut album was simply called “Gravy Train”, was a true progressive rock album with a lot of flute and raw tunes. A bit like Jethro Tull. This second album has a bit more commercial sound but still very progressive with well arranged songs. It is an amazing album if you ask us!
We do not know who designed the cover but it looks a bit like “Hipgnosis”.
Somehow this record became a highly sought after Vertigo release and therefore prices went up for pristine copies. So besides the music, this album is a very good investment because of it’s rarity and many collectors demand a copy. Accompanied with a Swirl inner is a must!
