Rarity Scale: Mega Rare
A lovely album for every serious Hard Rock/Psych Rock collector! There is a myth around this record about its catalogue number and why it was released on Mercury and not Vertigo.
The album was released in early 1970 on the Mercury label. This label is highly collectible when it comes to releases of the late 60’s and early 70’s like David Bowie “The Man Who Sold The World” and this “Ancient Grease”.
The disc of this copy is absolutely amazing. It plays near mint on both sides without any issues at all. Only some very minimal background at the very beginning of both sides (pressing). The record comes with an original polylined inner sleeve. We are not sure if it is the correct one because it is date stamped 02/71 and this record was released in 1970. This record carries stampers 111 which makes it a very early 1st pressing.
We grade the sleeve a lovely EX+. The fully laminated single sleeve has only some minor defaults. The opening and spine are lovely. The spine is fully readable. There is a very small damage at the bottom of the sleeves edge but that’s about it when it comes to issues of this lovely copy.

Ancient Grease was a four headed outfit from Wales who only released one album. This is a immaculate copy of that album. The music is lovely mix of hard rock and psych tracks. Well arranged. The song “Time to Die” really jumps out because of it’s wonderfull psychedelic vibe! But also the other songs are great and well arranged.
Does have Ancient Grease an own sound? No. Do we like the tracks? Absolutely!
As long as we know there is a myth around this album. Among some collectors and dealers this album must be the missing Vertigo VO5 album. Just before the release they switched the album from Vertigo to Mercury and released on catalogue number 6338 033.
Because the cover carries a VO price code credit it could be possible but we are not sure.
Others say it was never mend to release on VO5 because Vertigo never wanted use VO5 because of a hairspray brand called “VO5”. A small notice about this was made in “Melody Maker” music paper in 1970. So who knows;).
The artwork looks like something from “Marcus Keef” but it is not credited on the album. Later pressings credits “Lawrence” as the artwork designer. We are not sure if this is a company or person.
